Sikh US cop shot dead in Texas; India says ‘deeply grieved’

Date:

A 42-year-old Indian-American Sikh police officer died on Friday after he was shot multiple times during a traffic stop in Texas.

The victim, Sandeep Dhaliwal, was the deputy Sheriff of Harris County.

Dhaliwal was attacked when he stopped a vehicle with a man and woman inside and one of them got out and shot him “ambush-style” at least twice in a “ruthless, cold-blooded way”, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, a senior police official told reporters.

Foreign Minister Dr S Jaishankar condoling his death, tweeted: “Deeply grieved to learn of the shooting of Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal, a Sikh Indian-American officer in Houston, USA. We have just visited that city. My condolences to his family.”

Gonzalez said: “We immediately looked at his dashcam to see what the suspect looked like and took a photo of the suspect on the scene with their phone and immediately got that out to our intel people.”
