Washington DC: US Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has pledged to make reducing the cost of living and ending the war with Iran the party’s immediate priorities after Democrats secured projected victories in both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, signalling an aggressive shift in Washington’s political landscape.
Addressing a news conference on Wednesday (local time), Schumer said Democrats would focus on delivering economic relief to American households and holding President Donald Trump’s administration accountable, regardless of whether the White House cooperated.
“We have five words for the American people. Relief is on the way,” Schumer declared, describing the election outcome as an opportunity for Democrats to translate their campaign promises into tangible relief for voters.
He said bringing down household expenses would be the party’s foremost priority, highlighting the difficult financial choices confronting families amid rising prices of essential goods and services.
Schumer pointed to the dilemma faced by Americans forced to choose between spending on fuel, groceries, health care and electricity, arguing that the economic pressures had become increasingly difficult to sustain.
“We are going to work hard to drive costs down with the president or without him, period,” he said.
Attributing the Democratic resurgence to its focus on everyday economic concerns, Schumer said voters had responded to the party’s emphasis on inflation, affordability and alleged corruption within the Trump administration.
He credited coordination between the party’s House and Senate leadership, along with the selection of candidates who understood the concerns of their respective constituencies, for helping Democrats make significant electoral gains.
The Democratic leader also accused Republicans of failing to recognise the public’s demand for change, alleging that the party had placed Trump’s political interests ahead of the economic concerns of ordinary Americans.
Schumer Demands End To Iran War
Turning to foreign policy, Schumer called for an immediate end to the US military campaign against Iran, questioning the administration’s objectives and accusing Trump of failing to provide Americans with a consistent explanation for the conflict.
“The American people don’t know what the heck we’re fighting for in Iran. He’s never made it clear. He changes his mind day to day and minute to minute. This war must end. It must end,” Schumer said.
He indicated that Democrats would use their newly strengthened position in Congress to challenge the administration’s military decisions, including by exercising congressional authority over federal spending.
Schumer pointed out that several Republicans had already joined Democrats in opposing the continuation of the war, suggesting that bipartisan support could emerge for efforts to restrict the administration’s military campaign.
“We are going to end the war,” he said, invoking the constitutional power of the purse as an important mechanism available to Congress to check presidential authority over military engagements.
He argued that the founding fathers had deliberately equipped Congress with financial oversight powers to prevent presidents from pursuing wars without the consent of the American people.
Democrats Signal Tougher Oversight Of Trump Administration
Beyond economic and foreign policy priorities, Schumer warned that the incoming Democratic majority would intensify scrutiny of the Trump administration through congressional investigations, legal action and legislative measures.
He said Democrats would respond whenever they believed the president had acted unlawfully or disregarded the interests and demands of the American public.
“Whenever Trump defies the will of the American people or the law, we will launch investigations, take him to court, and entangle him in legislative razor wire,” Schumer said.
His remarks indicate that the administration could face sustained congressional scrutiny once Democrats assume control of both chambers, potentially triggering investigations into executive decisions and policies.
However, Schumer maintained that the election victory should be viewed as a responsibility to deliver results rather than an unrestricted political mandate.
“This is not about me. This is about the American people and what they want, and what they need, and what we can do to help them plain and simple,” he said.
The Democratic victory in the 2026 midterms marks a significant setback for Trump and the Republican Party, with projected results indicating that Democrats are set to regain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The shift is expected to reshape the balance of power in Washington, giving Democrats greater authority to influence legislation, scrutinise government policies and challenge the president’s agenda.
While control of the House would provide Democrats with the ability to launch investigations and conduct oversight hearings, their Senate majority would strengthen their influence over legislation and presidential nominations.
Schumer’s remarks suggest that Democrats intend to use their electoral gains not only to advance their domestic agenda but also to mount a more assertive challenge to Trump’s administration, particularly over the economy and the war with Iran.
