China Raises Questions Over US Holding G20 Presidency In 2026

Date:

New Delhi: China has voiced objections to the United States hosting the Group of 20 nations in 2026, as previously announced by President Joe Biden’s administration. This objection is reportedly supported by Russia and the discussions took place during the current G20 summit in India, as per media reports.

Although the exact reasons for China’s objection are not clear, it’s worth noting that by the end of 2025, all G20 members will have hosted at least one summit, signaling the start of a new rotation. The United States previously hosted the inaugural G20 summit in Washington in 2008.

These objections may be reflective of China’s ongoing tensions with the United States on various issues, such as Taiwan and technology export controls. Notably, both Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin were absent from the G20 summit in New Delhi.

The G20 divides into regional sub-groups that determine the summit’s host. The United States is in a subgroup with Canada, Australia, and Saudi Arabia. The White House has not yet responded on this matter.

US Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer, speaking in New Delhi, highlighted that India, Brazil, and South Africa, which are part of the BRICS group, including China and Russia, currently hold the G20 chairmanship.

“They are committed to the G20 success, so is the United States. We will host after those three,” Finer said. “And if China is not, that’s unfortunate for everyone, but much more unfortunate, we believe, for China.”
