Unfazed Tharoor defends himself

Date:

Thrissur: Former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor on Friday said he hopes  Delhi Police can speedily solve the death case of his wife Sunanda Pushkar.

He added he will not compromise police proceedings by engaging in public debates.

“I would like to see the matter proceed in a way that gives us closure on Sunanda’s demise and justice for all, starting with her. It has been a year and I have not been allowed to mourn in peace. I am not going to engage in public polemics on what is still a very painful personal tragedy and what I hope is a professional police investigation,” Tharoor told media reporters.

“I have been silent on the issue because when there is a police enquiry going on, it is my duty to not undermine or compromise the enquiry in anyway by something I say in public. I am not going to engage in public debates for the sake of TRPs; my interest as a bereaved husband is to find out what happened to my wife in the view of the police and why it happened,” he added.

Tharoor also called for the police investigation to be fair and without any political considerations.

“I think it is very important that a matter like this which is the object of so much public attention and so much public controversy, for most part misinformation, distortion and even outright lies, be done professionally without any political pressure or consideration,” he said.

Stating he did not expect his wife’s demise to be a result of murder, Tharoor said he pledged his support to the Delhi Police to solve the mystery.

“I had issued a statement upon hearing the decision of the Delhi Police to file an FIR against unknown persons for a case of murder in relation to the tragic demise of my wife Sunanda just under a year ago. I was completely taken aback because none of us in the family had had any reason to believe that any foul play would have been involved in her passing,” he said.

“There is no reason for anyone to have done her any harm. But obviously I have pledged full support to the police for them to establish the facts and get to the bottom of the case,” he added.

Sunanda Pushkar, who married Shashi Tharoor in 2010, had checked into The Leela Hotel in Chanakyapuri a day before her death on January 17, 2014.

Tharoor’s aides said the couple had checked into the luxury hotel because of renovation work at his Delhi bungalow.

Delhi Police on Tuesday stated a case under IPC Section 302 was registered with regard to her death, adding medical reports indicated her demise was due to poisoning.

Prior to her death, Sunanda was embroiled in a spat with Pakistan-based journalist, Mehr Tarar, whom she accused of stalking her husband.
