Nation pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi on 67th death anniversary

New Delhi: The nation on Friday paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 67th death anniversary.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to the Father of the Nation on his death anniversary. “My tributes to Pujya (respected) Bapu,” he tweeted.

The day is also observed as Martyrs’ Day. On this day in 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated at a prayer meeting. 

Modi also paid tributes, on the Martyr’s Day, to all those who have laid down their lives for the country.

“On Martyrs’ Day, I pay homage to each & every martyr who laid his or her life for our Nation. Their bravery & courage will always inspire,” he added.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also paid homage. “Lets us pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary by following the path of non violence, truth and transparency in our lives,” he tweeted. 

Gujarat is paying rich tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary as the entire state will observe two minutes silence at 11 am.

An all religion prayer meeting was organized at the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad and Kirti Mandir in Porbandar, the birth place of Mahatma Gandhi.

Prominent leaders from various political parties and other dignitaries will pay floral tributes to the father of the nation at his Samadhi Rajghat in New Delhi.
