Copenhagen: You know who’s going to Rio? Our women archers!
The Indian women’s recurve team produced a resilient performance, securing their 2016 Rio Olympics berth after defeating their German opponents at the archery World Championships in Denmark.
Who shone?
The women’s trio comprising Deepika Kumari, Laxmi Rani Majhi and Rimil Buriuly recovered from 1-3 to eventually seal a 5-3 win over German trio of Elena Richter, Lisa Unruh and Karina Winter and make the last eight.
Let down
Meanwhile, the men’s team consisting of Rahul Banerjee, Mangal Singh Champia and Jayanta Talukdar failed to book their Olympic berth after losing to second seed Italy 26-29 in an enthralling tie break.
It’s not over
However, the men’s trio can still earn individual Olympic berths through their respective individual events, which starts on Wednesday.
The 10th seed Indian women archery team will now square-off against Colombia in the quarterfinal.
