Taiwan court rules in favour of same-sex marriages

Date:

Taiwan’s constitutional court ruled on Wednesday that same-sex couples have the right to legally marry, the first such ruling in Asia.

The Judicial Yuan, Taiwan’s court, said current marriage laws violated the constitutional rights of same-sex couples and it gave a period of two years for laws to be amended to allow same-sex marriage.

Taiwan’s ruling party, the Democratic Progressive Party, supports the change and will be responsible with amending the laws to align with the court’s ruling.

The Taiwan court’s ruling could set a precedent among Asian nations that still hold predominantly conservative social views.
