The Vulnerability Series which took 19 months to create was inspired by Omari’s own experience with displacement, he currently has a refugee status in Belgium.

“Being a refugee is like having a new lump in your body that you had nothing to do with, and it will stay until the last day, so you better deal with it,” Al Omari told CNN

Syrian President Bashar Al Assad is also featured. Putin, whose military has conducted airstrikes on Syria’s rebel held areas, is depicted as a homeless person, whereas Assad appears partially submerged in water with only a paper boat to come to his aid.

“My aim somehow shifted from an expression of anger to a more vivid desire of disarming these figures, (to) picture them outside their positions of power,” Reuters quoted Omari as telling Al Jazeera. These portraits have recieved a positive response and have been noted as a unique perspective on the refugee crisis.
