Tamil Nadu CM holds meeting with legal experts, ministers

Date:

Chennai, Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami held a meeting on Saturday with legal experts and state ministers, over the court proceedings on Cauvery Management Board (CMB).

The state government had filed a petition before the Supreme Court seeking to initiate contempt proceedings against Centre for not constituting the board within the top court’s six-week deadline that ended on March 29.

On March 31, the Central Government filed a clarification petition in the Supreme Court, seeking more time to form the CMB, and asked whether it could modify the composition of the board.

In the ruling, the court reduced Tamil Nadu’s share in the Cauvery water to 177.25 thousand million cubic feet.

Earlier today, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) announced that it was going to launch ‘Cauvery Retrieval Walk’ to demand immediate constitution of Cauvery Management Board (CMB) with DMK working President M.K. Stalin launching the walk from Trichy’s Mukkombu area.

Former Union Information and Technology Minister A Raja also demanded the implementation of the Supreme Court order on Cauvery issue in letter and spirit. Talking to ANI, Raja said, “We want to implement the entire (Supreme Court) order in letter & spirit.”

He also warned Centre and Tamil Nadu government that non-fulfillment of the apex court’s Cauvery order will lead to the creation of a separate state for the entire Tamil community.

On February 16, Supreme court asked the Centre to form the CMB and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) to implement a formula for sharing of water between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka within six weeks.(With inputs from ANI)
