Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, passes away at 76

Aretha Franklin, the ‘Queen of Soul’ and one of America’s greatest singers died on Thursday at the age of 76.

Her publicist, Gwendolyn Quinn said that the cause of the death was advanced pancreatic cancer.  The statement said, ‘Franklin’s official cause of death was due to advance pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin’s oncologist, Dr Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute’ in Detroit.’ The legendary singer was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and announced last year she was retiring from music.

She won 18 Grammy Awards, plus two honorary ones for her lifetime of work. She had 17 top 10 songs and 22 top 40 albums.

In a statement, her family said, ‘In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins knew no bounds.’

In her extraordinary seven decades career, she had given many hits like hit songs such as Respect, Chain of Fools. She was the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, in 1987.
