14 dead, several injured due to Tornadoes in US’ Alabama

Fourteen people have reportedly lost their lives so far in a series of tornadoes that made landfall in a southeast Alabama and Georgia on Sunday and destroyed several homes in the area.

Reportedly, Lee County Sherif Jay Jones confirmed that at least 12 people died within an area of about five to six miles south of Opelika in Alabama.

He also added that the people, who were injured in the tornado, have been shifted to the hospital.

“We have a pretty significant area of damage,” Jones said.

The National Weather Service Birmingham Alabama took to its official Twitter account saying, “TORNADO EMERGENCY for southern Lee & northern Russell Counties! Large & EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TORNADO ON THE GROUND near Dupree, moving East.”

Authorities in the region are continuously providing search and rescue operations for the people stuck in the tornado.

CNN Meteorologist Gene Norman, two tornadoes touched down Lee County back-to-back within the span of one hour on Sunday afternoon.

The tornadoes have caused severe loss to life and property.
