Soma Burman appointed as the new Controller General of Accounts, seventh woman to hold office

The Union government has appointed Soma Burman as the new Controller General of Accounts (CGA).

She will be starting her tenure from December 1st. She is the 24th CGA and the seventh women to hold this position.

The officer belongs to the 1986 batch Indian Civil Accounts Service. It is a central service, the recruitment for which is conducted by the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC), a constitutional body.

“The government appointed Burman, as the Controller General of Accounts with effect from December 1st, 2019”, a press release from the Union Ministry of Finance read.

In a career spanning 33 years, the officer has served in different positions in the Union Ministries such as Home Affairs, Information and Broadcasting, Industry, Finance, Human Resources Development and Shipping, road transport and highways.

Prior to being elevated to this office, the officer held the position of Additional Controller General of Accounts in the office of CGA and was responsible for dealing with critical areas of accounting rules, policy and reforms, financial reporting, data analytics and cash and budget management.

The accounts department plays an integral role in ensuring that the legislature holds the executive responsible for its acts of commission and omission. It is integral to a parliamentary democracy such as India.
