Trump says large number of cases is a ‘badge of honour’, mulls travel ban to Brazil

Date:

US President Donald Trump has called the large number of cases being recorded in the US as a “badge of honour”.

The US presently has more than 1.5 million cases and over 93,000 deaths reported—the most across the globe.

“You know when you say that we lead in cases, that’s because we have more testing than anybody else. It’s a great tribute to the testing and all of the work that a lot of professionals have done. “So I view it as a badge of honour. Really, it’s a badge of honour,” Trump said.

Meanwhile, the US is also considering a travel ban to and from Brazil due to the serious situation emerging in the Latin American nation.

With over 2.71 lakh cases being reported, Brazil now has the third-highest number of cases in the world. The total number of deaths in the largest nation of South America stands at 17,971.

Brazil, accused of not taking the pandemic seriously during the initial weeks, is now witnessing a major spike in the number of cases and is now emerging as the new epicentre. Even President Jair Bolsonaro had described this serious epidemic as just a “minor flu” previously.

It is under these circumstances that President Trump said that the US is considering enforcing a travel ban to and from Brazil. According to him, this will prevent a large number of cases from being imported into the US.
