Fact Check: Is Joe Biden Seen Apologising To The Daughter Of An African-American Policeman In This Pic? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A picture of US President Joe Biden kneeling in front of a child is being shared on social media with a claim that he apologised to the daughter of an African-American policeman who lost his life in America.

“अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति जीतने के बाद अमेरिका में मारे गए अश्वेत पुलिस कर्मी की बेटी से घुटने के बल माफ़ी माँग रहा है दुनिया का सर्वशक्तिशाली व्यक्ति अपने देश के एक आम नागरिक के साथ हुई नाइंसाफ़ी के लिए शर्मिंदा है घुटने पर बैठा है यही लोकतंत्र है,” the post read in Hindi.

(Translation: After winning, the US President knelt down and apologised to the daughter of a black policeman killed in America. The most powerful person in the world is ashamed of the injustice done to a common citizen of his country. This is democracy.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false and misleading.

A simple Reverse Image Search of the picture led us to the same picture uploaded by Joe Biden on his official Instagram account on November 15, 2020.

The picture was geotagged to Detroit, Michigan.

We also found an article by Detroit Free Press dated September 9, 2020. ‘Joe Biden stops by Detroit’s Three Thirteen store, says he’s shopping for his grandkids,’ the headline of the article read.

The article also featured various other pictures of Biden with the child. One of the pictures was captioned, “Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden shops at Three Thirteen, an apparel store on the city’s Avenue of Fashion, with the help of the owner’s son CJ Brown September 09, 2020 in Detroit, Michigan. Chip Somodevilla Getty Images.”

As per the above article, the boy in the picture is CJ Brown, son of a shop owner in Detroit, Michigan.

We then ran another Reverse Image Search, along with the keyword search and found the original image on the website of Reuters.

The picture description read, “Democratic U.S. presidential nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden speaks to CJ Brown as he makes a brief stop at “Three Thirteen” clothing store to buy a few items for his grandchildren while visiting Detroit, Michigan, September 9, 2020. REUTERS/Leah Millis TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY.

As per Reuters description, the picture was clicked by Leah Millis, so we scanned through her social media accounts to look for some more information.

On her Twitter account, we found a tweet dated November 17, 2020, where she has clarified that the viral claim being circulated with the picture is false.

“The photograph I took is from September 9 in Detroit. Biden is greeting young CJ Brown as Biden makes a brief stop at “Three Thirteen” clothing store to buy a few items for his grandchildren during a campaign visit to the area,” she tweeted.

We debunked the same picture which was being shared in November with a claim that Joe Biden publicly apologized to George Floyd’s daughter, who lost his life due to police brutality in America.
