National Herald Case: ED Serves Fresh Summons To Sonia Gandhi To Appear on July 21

Date:

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) served Congress president Sonia Gandhi with a fresh summons on Monday to join the probe on July 21, into an alleged money laundering case involving the National Herald newspaper.

The ED had earlier granted Gandhi’s request to delay the case’s questioning, and it had asked the Congress president to record her statement with the agency during the last week of July.

In a letter to the agency, the  president of the Congress requested more time, stating that doctors had strictly recommended her to rest at home following her hospitalisation on account of Covid and lung infection.  On June 23, she was supposed to appear before the ED.

Gandhi was served notice to appear initially on June 8; however, after she tested positive for Covid-19, new notice was sent for appearance on June 23 and now on July 21.

Rahul Gandhi, a former president of the Congress, Sonia Gandhi’s son had previously been questioned for over 51 hours over a five-day period. According to reports, he was questioned on a few transactions carried out by the Dotex Merchandise Pvt Ltd company, Kolkata.

A number of Congress leaders protested in the streets during this period over the alleged abuse of central agencies against members of the opposition.
