Centre Issues Advisory To News Publishers, OTTs On Ads Of Online Betting Platforms

Date:

New Delhi: The Centre on Monday issued a detailed advisory to OTT platforms, television channels, and digital publishers asking them to refrain from publishing and broadcasting advertisements for online betting.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in an advisory said that instances of an advertisement on online betting platforms are still visible on some OTT platforms and digital news platforms.

According to the advisory “some online offshore betting platforms have started using news websites to surrogate products to advertise their betting platforms on TV channels.”

The advisory further reiterated that betting and gambling is an illegal activity, thus, the advertisement of gambling and betting platforms is prohibited.

The government added that “the Department of Consumer Affairs has also informed that online betting platforms have been advertising themselves as professional sports blogs, sports news websites, etc. while providing an indicative list of online betting platforms that use news for surrogate advertising.”

The Ministry added, “Contravention/violation of the above may invite penal action under the applicable laws.”
