Fact Check: Article from a Parody News Website Shared as Real Incident During Blood Donation

Date:

Screenshots of a news report are widely shared on social media, claiming that when a young man went to a hospital to donate blood, he was not given biscuits to eat… so, he got angry and drank his donated blood.

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “मिटरोंन- दुखद है कि भ्रष्टाचार हमारे देश में किस कदर अपनी जड़ें जमा चुका है… भला बताओ, भ्रष्टाचारी अब इतने बेशर्म हो गए हैं कि रक्तदान के बाद बंटने वाले बिस्कुट-जूस तक नहीं छोड़ रहे हैं” (English translation: Mitron now the corruption has become so deep-rooted in our country, that the corrupt ones are not even sparing biscuits and juice which are normally distributed to people at blood donation camps.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Running a simple Reverse Image Search, we found a website Hindi.Fauxy.com carrying the same article three years ago. It has been told that this incident took place in Chhattisgarh on the occasion of World Blood Donation Day. According to the news, a young man named Chuttan Pandey decided to take revenge for not getting biscuits after donating blood. He drank back the blood that he had donated.

The whole story is written in an absurd way. For example, consider these lines, ‘Most people donate blood with the intention of eating biscuits’. Apart from this, also pay attention to this line, ‘If the matter was serious, then Foxy’s team also set out to find Chuttan in the forests of Chhattisgarh and after a lot of effort, he was found hanging upside down on a tree’. It is clear that this news is just satire.

Moreover, the about section of the website clearly mentions that “The Foxy is a satirical web portal. The materials published on this website are based on fiction. Readers are advised not to misunderstand The Foxy articles as genuine and true.”

We also found the image used in a article published in Getty Images, dated May 8, 2013, with a caption: “Indian medical students give blood during a donation drive to mark World Red Cross Day in Amritsar on May 8, 2013. World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, observed annually in celebration of the organisation’s humanitarian movement, coincides with the birthday of Henry Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).”

We also did a keyword search but could not find any such news reported in any credible media websites.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that a screenshot from a parody news website is being shared as a real incident.
