Fact Check: Viral Image of Prime Minister Modi with a Tonsured Head Is Edited

Date:

Heeraben Modi, mother of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi passed away at the age of 100 years on December 30, 2022.

Against this backdrop, a viral image showing Modi with a bald head is doing the rounds on social media. Users have shared this image claiming it to be his recent image after shaving his head to pay respect to his mother according to Hindu traditions.

A Facebook user posted the viral picture with a caption: माननीय प्रधानमंत्री श्री नरेंद्र मोदी जी ने हिंदू रीति रिवाज के अनुसार अपनी मां के तिये पर मुंडन करवाया l धन्य है ये कर्मयोगी माताजी हिरा बा को भावभिनी श्रद्धांजलि (English translation: Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji shaved his head to pay respect to his mother as per Hindu custom)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral photo, and found it to be false.

Scanning through Modi’s social media handles to check whether he turn bald after his mother’s death or not, we found several tweets from the day of his mother’s death till the most recent ones, but no picture with his tonsured head had been posted.

Modi virtually inaugurated Bengal’s first Vande Bharat Express on the same day, and then met the Air Marshal PV Iyer (Retd) on December 31, 2022. He can be seen with an unshaven head in both events.

Searching further, we identified an article published by Moneycontrol on December 15, 2017, with a title: News in Pics: Your daily dose of pictures from around the world

The title of the image informs that it is from Modi’s media address after the first day of the winter session of the parliament in 2017. The image credit is given to PTI and the elements of the picture in the article match with the viral image except for the shaved head.

Even the archives section of PTI has the same image.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral image showing his tonsured head is morphed.
