Indian-Origin Manpreet Monica Singh Becomes First Female Sikh Judge In US

Houston: In a major achievement, Indian-origin Manpreet Monica Singh became the first female Sikh judge in the US, swearing in as Harris county judge.

Manpreet, who was born and raised in Houston was sworn in as a judge of the Harris County Civil Court at Law No.4 in Texas on Friday.

She is currently settled in Bellaire where she lives with her husband and two children. Her family migrated to the US in the early 1970s from India.

According to the report, Manpreet has been an experienced trial lawyer for 20 years. She has handled a number of civil rights organizations at the local, state, and national levels.

At the oath ceremony, Manpreet said, “It means a lot to me because I represent H-town (a nickname of Houston) the most, so for it to be us, I’m happy for it,”.

Ravi Sandill, Indian-American Judge and the state’s first South Asian judge, presided over the oath-taking ceremony and added, “It’s a really big moment for the Sikh community,”.

He further pointed out how Manpreet is not only an inspiration to the Sikh community but also to any women of colour.
