Fact Check: Old Video Of Police Being Threatened In Maharashtra Erroneously Shared As Karnataka

Date:

The Congress party is yet to decide their chief ministerial face after a historic win in Karnataka Elections 2023. Against this backdrop, a video showing a group of people arguing with a police officer is widely shared on social media, claiming that people have started threatening the police after the Congress victory in elections.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “अभी तो मुख्य मंत्री ने शपथ भी नही ली और ये हाल है कर्नाटक में बधाई हो जीत की” (English translation: The chief minister has not even taken the oath and this is the situation in Karnataka. Congratulations on winning)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, we spotted a YouTube channel carrying the extended version of the same viral video on January 8, 2021.

At the 20-second mark of the video, a man can be heard conversing with a policeman in Marathi. Upon closer observation, the badge of the Maharashtra Police is also visible on the arm of the policeman.

The billboards in the video contain text written in Marathi.

We also found a Facebook page carrying the same viral video on September 20, 2018, with a caption: “Dhuley Maharashtra. Miya Bhai Bolteyyyyy Aandoooo!!”. Check another post dated June 26, 2019, that carried the same viral video.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old unrelated video of police being threatened in Maharashtra is falsely linked to the Karnataka elections.
