IFFI 2023: Anurag Thakur Announces New Award Category For Web Series

Goa: The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is set to make history this year with the introduction of a groundbreaking category, the ‘Best Web Series’ award.

Anurag Thakur, the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, made the eagerly anticipated announcement, marking a significant step forward for the Indian web series industry. The award aims to recognize outstanding original web series produced on Indian OTT platforms, showcasing the country’s diverse linguistic and cultural narratives.

In a statement that reverberated throughout the entertainment industry, Minister Anurag Thakur expressed his delight, stating, “Delighted to announce the BEST WEB SERIES AWARD @IFFIGoa to be presented to an exceptional web series for its artistic merit, storytelling excellence, technical prowess, and overall impact. India is filled with exceptional talent; I encourage you to tell the story of a rising and aspirational New India – ready to lead the world, with a billion dreams and a billion untold stories!”

The introduction of the ‘Best Web Series’ award is a testament to the growing significance and influence of Indian OTT platforms. It aims to incentivize and foster investment opportunities within the thriving OTT sector, while also promoting content in regional Indian languages.

By recognizing exceptional talent and encouraging innovation, the award hopes to drive growth and elevate the Indian web series industry to new heights. The coveted award will be presented annually, starting this year at the 54th International Film Festival of India.

In conjunction with the exciting announcement, the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) has opened submissions for the Indian Panorama section at IFFI.

Filmmakers can submit entries for both feature and non-feature films, vying for the chance to be selected in this prestigious section.

The Indian Panorama section, a cornerstone of IFFI, aims to showcase outstanding films from various Indian languages, selected by a distinguished jury. These films will be screened not only at IFFI but also at esteemed international film festivals in India and abroad.

With a maximum of 26 films in the feature category and 21 films in the non-feature category set to be selected, the Indian Panorama section promises to offer a captivating array of cinematic excellence.

The selection process will include the Best Feature Film and the Best Non-Feature Film winners of the National Film Awards of 2023.

Filmmakers eager to participate have until August 10th, 2023, to submit their entries, ensuring a rigorous selection process for the coveted slots.

Scheduled to take place from November 20th to November 28th in the idyllic state of Goa, the International Film Festival of India 2023 is poised to captivate audiences and industry insiders alike. The recently announced nominations have already generated considerable buzz, with highly anticipated films such as ‘Kantara,’ ‘Darlings,’ and ‘Ponniyin Selvan II’ leading the pack. As the film fraternity eagerly awaits the festival, the inclusion of the ‘Best Web Series’ award category promises to bring the world of Indian OTT content to the forefront, solidifying its place in the global entertainment landscape.
