Fact Check: Image Of A Stamp, Released During Asian Games In 1982, Goes Viral With False Claims

Date:

A post is being widely circulated on social media claiming that during the Asian Games in 1982, Indira Gandhi issued a postage stamp depicting an Ottoman Muslim wrestler beating a Hindu wrestler.

The image of the stamp has been shared with a caption: “Indira Gandhi issued this stamp in 1982 during the Asian Games. This postage stamp depicts an Ottoman Muslim wrestler beating a Hindu top striker. You can think from this what is the mentality of Congress and how much the Congress hates Sanatan Dharma.”

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image search, the NM team found the stamp on the website Olympic Council of Asia. As per the website, postal stamps were issued in 1982 to commemorate the Asian Games held in New Delhi.

The same stamps were found on Stamp World and iStampGallery.com. According to the site, the postal stamp designed by A. Ramachandran was issued on October 30, 1982, on the occasion of 9th Asian Games. It further mentioned that the painting on the stamp was inspired by Janaki’s painting at the National Museum of New Delhi and has Persian influence and the Mughal Style of the early 17th century.

The image of the same stamp was also published on the website of A. Ramachandran.

However, none of the above sources has mentioned any religious angle affiliated with the painting as mentioned in the viral claim. Thus, it can be concluded that the viral claim is misleading.
