Indian Stabbed To Death In New Zealand, Family Demands Justice

Date:

New Delhi: Gurjit Singh, a 28-year-old man of Indian origin from Punjab, was discovered murdered outside his residence in Dunedin, New Zealand. Authorities have arrested a 33-year-old suspect in connection with Singh’s death.

Nishan Singh, Gurjit’s father, reportedly sold land in their village in Punjab to finance his son’s journey to New Zealand, as per Star News. The victim, originally from Ludhiana, worked as a technician for the telecom company Chorus.

The unnamed 33-year-old suspect, details undisclosed, is scheduled to appear in the Dunedin District Court, facing charges related to Singh’s tragic death.

Gurjit Singh’s lifeless body was found last week outside his Pine Hill home, surrounded by blood and shattered glass. Post-mortem results revealed that he succumbed to multiple stab wounds inflicted by a sharp object at his residence on Hillary Street, according to NZHerald.

“He (Singh) was excited about his wife coming (to New Zealand) and wanted to show her around, taking her to places like Queenstown,” a friend of Singh told StarNews.

Singh’s father, Nishan Singh, who reached Dunedin on Monday, said the police had done a good job in arresting the suspect.

Singh’s father, Nishan Singh, who arrived in Dunedin on Monday, commended the police for their successful arrest of the suspect. However, he expressed that his satisfaction would only come when justice is served.

During the investigation, Singh’s father received support from both the police and the local Punjabi community, as mentioned in StarNews. The Otago Punjabi Foundation Trust has initiated a ‘Givealittle page’ to aid Singh’s family, recognizing him as the sole breadwinner in the household.

“No parent should lose a son,” emphasized Nishan Singh in an interview with Star News.

Close associates of Singh asserted that he was a “good guy” with no known enemies or issues.

Worries about potential break-ins led Gurjit Singh to install security cameras at his residence, a precaution mentioned in the NZ Herald report.

“A team of 25 investigators are interviewing and speaking with family, friends and work colleagues of the victim, to try and establish his movements before his death,” said Detective Croudis, said Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, addressing Pine Hill residents.

An extended investigation now encompasses various vehicles, an additional residential property, and workplaces linked to the suspect. The inquiry will encompass Singh’s family, friends, and coworkers, with the goal of reconstructing his activities leading up to the tragic incident.

Detective Croudis emphasized the significant contribution of hours invested by the ESR team, both at the scene and in the laboratory, in supporting the police investigation.

Narindervir Singh, a member of the Otago Punjabi Foundation Trust, conveyed the heart-wrenching nature of the situation, as reported by the NZ Herald.
