The photograph of Hamas leaders, including Ismail Haniyeh and Khaled Mashal, seated around a table at an event, has garnered significant attention across the social media platforms. It is being widely claimed that the Hamas leaders are indulging in a lavish feast during the holy month of Ramadan, while Gaza residents suffer from starvation.

A Facebook user posted with a caption: “People are starving to death in Gaza, and Haniyeh and Mashal are eating delicious food in Qatar. Shame on you ya Arabs.”

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be False.

Conducting a reverse image search, our team found an Arabic news aggregator’s website featuring a report from Safa agency — a Palestinian news outlet, showcasing the same image.

According to the translated version of the page, the report was dated October 29, 2021, and highlighted a Hamas delegation’s participation “in the celebration of the Turkish Embassy in Qatar on the National Day of the Republic.”

Another report by the Safa agency mentions that a Hamas delegation, led by Ismail Haniyeh, offering congratulations to the Turkish president, government, and people on Republic Day.

The Palestinian Information Centre website also shared a photo story about this event on October 29, 2021, including the disputed photo. It’s worth noting that Ramadan fell in April and May 2021, indicating that the photo was not taken during Ramadan.

Hence, we can conclusively say that the 2021 picture depicting Hamas leaders at the Turkish Embassy in Qatar falsely shared as recent.
