Eat to beat the heat

Date:

New Delhi: As temperatures continue to soar, the mercury pushing even 48 C, it’s time to search for ways to beat the heat before we melt into puddles of sweat and desperation. Here are some quick, and (mostly) delicious ways to save yourself from the searing heat.

Watermelons/ Muskmelons: The higher the water content of a food, the cooler it keeps you. Foods chock-full of water slow down digestion and keep the body using less energy.

Leafy Greens: Raw vegetables and fruits contain 85-90% water, making them easy to digest. Anything that is easy to digest generates less heat.

Peppers: Spicy foods can make you sweat, which provides a cooling sensation. Places that are close to the equator typically have spicier food for this reason. Even if they are not cooling to the core, they do cool the skin.

Peaches: One of the most delicious fruits is known not only for its taste, but also for its cooling properties. Pineapples too, have a similar cooling effect.

Cucumbers: This summer food is very rich in water and effective in providing cooling effect to the body. Have cucumber ever day to reduce body heat naturally.

Cold milk/ Lemonade: Healthy and cold fluids like milk or lemon juice are effective in lowering body heat. Mix cold milk with honey and have empty stomach in the morning.

Coconut Water: Along with lowering body temperature, this serves a dual purpose of battling dehydration as well.

Besides binging on the food that keeps you cool, remember to avoid those foods that create excess body heat. These are foods such as butter, ice-cream (for its fat content,) nuts, dry fruits and alcohol are some of these heat producing foods.
