Meta has reportedly joined Microsoft and Google in offering voluntary exit packages to employees as major technology companies continue to restructure their workforces amid growing investments in artificial intelligence (AI).
The proposed programme in France could affect around 100 employees out of the subsidiary’s workforce of approximately 300.
According to French publication La Lettre, Meta is considering voluntary departures through a collective negotiated termination agreement, known as RCC under French labour law.
The arrangement allows companies to negotiate voluntary workforce reductions with trade unions. Employees interested in the offer have been asked to submit applications by November 5. Negotiations over the proposal reportedly began in July.
Meta’s Severance Package For Employees
Under the proposed terms, employees would receive compensation equivalent to 2.15 months’ salary for every year of service.
The package would also include up to 10 months of career transition leave, paid at 80 per cent of gross salary. Support for professional retraining and starting a business is also reportedly being considered.
Meta had reached a similar agreement in France in 2023, which was expected to result in 88 departures.
Meta’s Workforce Restructuring Amid AI Push
The reported move comes after Meta announced plans in April to cut around 8,000 jobs, representing 10 per cent of its global workforce. The company also reassigned 7,000 employees to AI-related functions in May.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has announced a buyout programme covering 60,000 eligible employees, while Google has offered voluntary exits in five countries.
Meta’s reported proposal reflects the broader workforce changes underway across the technology industry as companies increase their focus on AI.
