Best Christmas movies of all time

Date:

New Delhi: It’s that time of the year again when the lively chime of bells and carols engulf the neighbourhood in a celebratory fervor. Be it live-in trees for nature lovers, door-to-door carollers making your day or movies available at the click of a button, there really is a little something for everyone at Xmas.

NewsMobile brings you the best Christmas movies of all time.

It’s a wonderful life: The story of a compassionate angel who helps George Bailey (James Stewart), realise the significance of his life and all the others he’s affected, this film is a classic Christmas story. Full of touching dialogues and impeccable performances by James Stewart and Donna Reed, the film has had quite a few remakes. However, the original still remains one of the most acclaimed Christmas movies of all time.

Bad Santa: A dark comedy starring Billy Thornton and Tony Cox, this movie is an unconventional take on the Christmas spirit. Willie Stokes and his partner meet once a year to rob stores on Christmas Eve, but Willie’s life is gradually falling apart. However, there is renewed hope for him when he befriends a child while playing Santa at the mall he is planning to rob. Though it is not everyone’s cup of tea, this film effectively highlights the essence of Christmas:  hope, change and self-belief.

Home alone: Home Alone is a fun, heart warming tale of Kevin McCallister, a child-brat who is left behind at home as his family goes off on a Christmas holiday. The child outsmarts two con men keen on robbing his house. Set in a beautiful setting of a snowy Christmas, the story of this little child is an all time favourite.

Die Hard: An action packed thriller, this is the story of how John McClane (Bruce Willis), tries to diffuse a hostage situation during a Christmas party. Although it is not a typical heart-warming Christmas story, it is one of the most-watched Christmas themed movies ever made. It is based on the novel Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp, and has been directed by John McTiernen. Add it to your list of must watch movies this Christmas if you want to add some action to this holiday season.

Elf: Elf is a heart-warming comedy about a human who is raised as an elf when he is accidentally transported to the North Pole. He comes back to New York in search of his father, and hilarity ensues when they decide to live with each other. This movie is full of Yuletide spirit, and is among one of Will Ferrell’s best performances.

A Christmas Carol: Perhaps the best film adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic, this movie released in 1951. Starring Alastair Sim and Kathleen Harrisson, the movie is a charming portrayal of the timeless story full of Christmas spirit. It is a great film for children and adults alike, with important moral lessons and offering plenty of opportunities for introspection.  The movie has won great acclaim for Sim’s portrayal of Mr. Scrooge.
