Srini spoils BCCI party

Date:

The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Working Committee meeting, expected to discuss the fate of the two suspended IPL sides Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) was forced to adjourn after former Board President N Srinivasan tried to attend the meeting as a representative of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA).

The meeting was scheduled to begin at 4 pm on Friday but the drama created by Srinivasan’s alleged attempt to attend it delayed the start. After a delay of close to one hour, the meeting was adjourned indefinitely.

Meanwhile, all the pending issues have been deferred to the board’s AGM, likely to be held in Kolkata on September 27.

According to a BCCI sources, Srinivasan, despite being requested to stay away from the meeting – which was to decide the board’s course of action following the suspension of two IPL teams – due to his complicated legal status, decided to attend at his “own risk”.

Srinivasan arrived at the five-star hotel in Kolkata, venue for the meeting, early on Friday. Soon after lunch, a message was passed on by the BCCI hierarchy that he should not be attending the meeting considering the Supreme Court is yet to suggest administrative reforms to the BCCI.

Srinivasan, who was meeting his group members then, clarified he was well within his rights to represent TNCA.

Earlier this week, Cricket Association of Bihar, whose petition in 2014 had triggered the IPL scandal case in the Supreme Court, also opposed Srinivasan’s participation in the working committee meeting.

Earlier in February, Srinivasan had presided over the BCCI working committee meeting to which the apex court had taken strong objection.

BCCI ex-president Srinivasan was earlier asked to give up his post after his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was found guilty of spot-fixing in IPL. Srinivasan stepped aside temporarily but contested the elections that followed and lost out to Dalmiya.
