Fact Check: Mischievous Quote Goes Viral With False Attribution To CJI Chandrachud

Date:

A post is widely shared on social media claiming that Chief Justice of India (CJI), DY Chandrachud, purportedly sought people’s support to safeguard the Constitution and slammed the dictatorial government.

The quote attributed to Justice Chandrachud in Hindi reads: “हम लोग अपनी तरफ से पूरी कोशिश कर रहे हैं भारत के संविधान भारत के लोकतंत्र को बचाने की लेकिन आप सबका सहयोग भी इसके लिए बहुत मायने रखता है सब जनता एक होकर मिलकर सड़कों पर निकलो और सरकार से अपने हक के सवाल करो यह तानाशाह सरकार तुम लोगों को हरायेगी, धमकाएगी | लेकिन तुम्हें डरना नहीं है हौसला रखो और सरकार से अपना हिसाब मांगो, मैं तुम्हारे साथ हूं – डी वाई चंद्रचूड़ (चीफ़ जस्टिस)” (English translation: “We are trying our best to save the Constitution of India, the democracy of India, but your cooperation is also very important for this, all the people should unite and come out on the streets and ask the government about their rights, this dictatorial government. Will beat people, threaten. But you don’t have to be afraid of, keep courage and ask the government for your account, I am with you – DY Chandrachud (Chief Justice)”)

The picture post was shared by boxer and politician Vijender Singh on his official Facebook page. The post can be seen here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post, and found it to be false.

But our team could not find any report suggesting that Justice Chandrachud made the above statement.

In a press release, the public relations office of the Supreme Court has refuted the claims of CJI making the viral statement.

“It has come to the notice of the Supreme Court of India that a social media post (invoking the public to protest against authorities) using a file photograph and falsely quoting the Chief Justice India is being circulated,” the statement reads.

“The post is fake, ill-intended and mischievous. No such post has been issued by the Chief Justice of India nor has he authorised any such post. Appropriate action is being taken in this regard with the law enforcement authorities,” it added.

Hence, with the above findings, it is clear that the viral quote has been falsely attributed to CJI Chandrachud.
