Scientists just named a newly discovered water beetle after Leonardo DiCaprio

Date:

It took over two decades of acting for Leonardo DiCaprio to finally win an Oscar. Now, just two years later, a newly discovered water beetle has been given the name of the famed Hollywood actor and environmentalist.

Going by the scientific name of Grouvellinus leonardodicaprioi, the new beetle was among three new species discovered by citizen scientists at a waterfall in a remote part of Malaysia.

The bug was discovered on a field trip run by Taxon Expeditions, a Netherlands-based group “that organizes expeditions to remote areas for people interested in nature and science and help them make scientific discoveries,” according to its website.

The beetle announcement appeared in the open access journal ZooKeys, which noted that “citizen science initiatives in biodiversity research have become increasingly popular, with an estimated annual growth rate of 10% in number of projects launched.”

The beetle joins other bugs that have been named for famous people, including the blonde-haired Donald Trump moth and the big-armed Arnold Schwarzenegger fly.

Kate Winslet, who starred alongside DiCaprio in Titanic, already has a beetle named after her, as do George W Bush, Bill Clinton and Adolf Hitler, the Guardian said.

The tribute marks the 20th anniversary of the celebrity’s Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation and its efforts towards biodiversity preservation. The mission of the foundation is “protecting the world’s last wild places,” according to the group’s website.
