London gets ready to beat air pollution with this idea!

London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone, which aims to reduce air pollution, is now live in the central section of the city.

The world’s first 24-hour Ultra Low Emission Zone is a year-round measure that ensures vehicles that don’t meet new emission standards will incur a daily charge.

Depending on the time of day, drivers may also have to pay a congestion charge on top of that.

The Transport for London website reads, “To help improve air quality, an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) now operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year within the same area of central London as the Congestion Charge. Most vehicles, including cars and vans, need to meet the ULEZ emissions standards or their drivers must pay a daily charge to drive within the zone.”

• £12.50 for most vehicle types, including cars, motorcycles and vans (up to and including 3.5 tonnes)
• £100 for heavier vehicles, including lorries (over 3.5 tonnes) and buses/coaches (over 5 tonnes)

The website also offers a webpage that allows drivers to check if their vehicle meets emissions standards before driving through the ULEZ or the larger Low Emission Zone.

If a vehicle doesn’t meet standards, the website offers a number of suggestions other than paying the charge, including to use public transport or to ‘go electric.’

The ULEZ is expected to:

• contribute to improved air quality for millions of people in London
• reduce exhaust NOx emissions by up to 45 percent

These effects will be especially beneficial to children and young people, older people, those with respiratory problems, and residents of high pollution areas.
