After a failed bid at UNSC against India, Pakistan decides to go to UNHRC

Date:

After being snubbed by UNSC regarding India’s move on Kashmir, Pakistan has deployed former foreign secretary Tehmina Janjua, to help get a resolution against India at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for alleged human rights violations in Kashmir. Ms. Janjua was also Pakistan’s former permanent representative at the UNHRC.

Ever since India scrapped Article 370 and made Jammu and Kashmir a union territory, Pakistan has been trying hard to make noise about it in international forums. They were left unsuccessful at UNSC and have also got a dismal response from top leaders worldwide. Now, they have decided to move the human rights arm of the UN.

Pakistan’s focus is now on the 42nd session of the UNHRC in Geneva and to help garner support from the 47-member body.
UNHRC meets from September 9 to September 27. This comes a day after Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will speak at the UN General Assembly (UNGA). Prime Minister is also scheduled to address the UNGA.

In his recent meetings on the sidelines of the G7 in Biarritz, France, PM Modi made it extremely clear that Kashmir is India’s internal matter and it will not accept any mediation. President Trump also accepted this and said that India seems in control of the situation.

Pakistan has been reiterating the point that by changing the geographical boundaries and taking away the rights of the Kashmiris, India has violated human rights principles.

India, on the other hand, has maintained that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is under control, peaceful and returning to normal in a planned manner. They have firmly made their stand clear that Kashmir remains an internal issue and Pakistan needs to realise this quickly and move on.
