J&K Legislative Council abolished

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council was abolished on Thursday in accordance with Section 57 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019. This was the upper house of the State legislature.

The tenure of the members too has ended on an abrupt note. It had 36 members.

The General Administration Department of the State has asked all the 116 employees of the council to report to it by October 22nd.

The Secretary of the Council has also been asked to submit all documents, legislations and other records to the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

The building and its furniture and digital gadgets will go to the Director of Estates.

The vehicles provided to the members shall be transferred to the State Motor Garages department.

The Legislative Councils serve as the upper house of the State Legislatures. Its demand is raised in the State Legislative Assemblies and then passed by 2/3 of its members before being voted upon by both house of the Parliament. Article 169 of the Indian constitution deals with the creation of Legislative Councils in the States. Presently, the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana and Karnataka have these councils.

The erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir had a Legislative council before it was abolished by the passing of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019.
