Fact Check: Were 24 people riding an auto rickshaw in Telangana during lockdown? Here’s the truth

Date:

A video is being shared on social media with a claim that police stopped an auto rickshaw carrying 24 people at a checkpoint in Telangana for flouting social distancing rules put in place due to COVID-19.

The caption of the video reads: “Social distancing in Telangana. Twenty four adults and kids were travelling in this auto rickshaw when the cops pulled it up at a rare rural checkposts.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be FAKE.

When we extracted the keyframes of the video through InVid and put them through Reverse Image Search along with the phrase ’24 people in auto’, we found various reports from August 2019, featuring the same video.

According to the reports, the driver, Abdul, had packed his vehicle with 24 passengers, all women and children, who were headed towards Thimmapur village, Telangana. The overloaded vehicle was stopped in the town of Bhongir, Telangana.

Commissioner of Police Karimnagar, Telangana also posted the same video on his Twitter handle on August 11, 2019, and requested people to not board overcrowded passenger autos.

Hence, the above information proves that the video being circulated is old and not related to COVID-19.
