UNSC elections: India outlines priorities in a post COVID-19 world

In the run-up to the United Nations Security Council’s elections for the 10 non-permanent members, India has released a brochure outlining India’s priorities that will be instrumental in shaping a post-COVID-19 world with a thrust towards reforming various multilateral institutions.

Releasing the brochure, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said that the global community will face new and traditional challenges. He also pointed out that the COVID-19 crisis has further contributed to a more complex international economic and political order.

India’s candidature has been unanimously endorsed by all nations in the Asia-Pacific group and it is expected to secure a seat and this will be a term for two years beginning from January 2021.

The External Affairs Minister reiterated India’s commitment towards a rule-based international order with adherence to international laws.

He set out India’s priorities and said that it will be based on the following:

Ø Exploring new opportunities for progress,

Ø An effective response to international terrorism,

Ø Reforming multilateral institutions,

Ø A comprehensive approach to international peace and security,

Ø Promoting technology with a human touch to find solutions.

He further elaborated that India’s approach will be guided by 5 S’s set out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They are:

1. Samman (Respect)

2. Samvad (Dialogue)

3. Sahyog (Cooperation)

4. Shanti (Peace)

5. Samriddhi (Prosperity)
