Date:

According to a report published by Dainik Bhaskar, dated July 31, 2022, a man named Mohammad Mustaki was beaten to death by a mob in Samastipur on the charge of the theft of cattle. In the above context, a CCTV footage is widely shared on social media, claiming that the viral video shows a mob lynching in Bihar.

The video is shared with a caption: “आखिर, ये ज़ुल्म कब तक….” (English translation: “After all, how long will this oppression last…” Mohammad Mustaqim was killed by some (7) people in Bihar’s Samastipur on a baseless and false allegation of stealing a bull. FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did a fact check and found the claim to be misleading.

On doing a Google Reverse Image with one of the keyframes, we found the screenshot of the video uploaded in a Times Now report, dated August 3, 2022. According to the report, the video shows a man who was brutally murdered in front of his family due to personal rivalry in Hisar, Haryana.

The same incident was also covered by Amar Ujala on  August 3, 2022. The report mentioned that the incident took place in Hisar, Haryana. According to the report, the man in the viral image was identified as a 26-year-old Vikas.

Naina Devi, his wife, informed that Vikas was sleeping in the room when six or seven men entered the house at around 2 am with the help of a folding ladder. After finding Vikas, they started attacking him and he ran out of the house to save his life, where he was killed and the incident was recorded on the CCTV.

The report also mentioned that Vikas’s father, Jaiveer was also murdered a few years ago.

We also found a tweet by Hansi Police dated august 13, 2022, where it was mentioned that police have arrested 3 people in connection with Vikas’s murder.

This proves that the CCTV footage is from Haryana and not Bihar.

Moreover, in the Samastipur lynching case, a report by Dainik Bhaskar mentioned that 35-year-old Mohammad Mustaki was fatally lynched by a mob but there were other three people with him who managed to escape.

The report also included a few pictures of the location, from which it is evident that the location is different from the one seen in the CCTV footage.

Thus, based on the above fact check, we can ascertain that the viral claim is misleading.
