Sydney: A letter from the late Queen Elizabeth II to Sydney residents won’t be read until 63 years from now!
The secret letter penned by Her Majesty is kept in a glass case and secured inside a vault in a historic Sydney building.
The 1986 letter, addressed to Sydney’s special residents, was only meant to be read in 2085.
The instructions are simply signed “Elizabeth R.” and say, “On a suitable day to be selected by you in the year 2085 A.D, would you please open this envelope and convey to the citizens of Sydney my message to them.”
What would the Queen want to say to the Sydneysiders? Nobody is aware, not even the Queen’s personal staff is aware of what the letter says but “From her famous first trip to Australia, the only reigning sovereign to ever visit, it was clear Her Majesty held a special place in her heart for Australia,” Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement recently.
Queen Elizabeth II visited Australia 16 times while serving as head of state.
“Fifteen more tours before cheering crowds in every part of our country confirmed the special place she held in ours,” added Albanese.
The Commonwealth realm is a group of 14 nations (excluding the United Kingdom) acknowledges the British monarch as their head of state, a position that is explicitly stated in the constitution and laws of some of these nations. In 1999, Australia held a referendum on whether to remove the Queen as head of state, but it was defeated
On Friday, Sydney’s iconic Opera House was lit with a tribute to the Queen.
The 14 nations went on to officially recognize King Charles III as their head of state.
