Fact Check: Does This Video Show Recent Landslides In Himachal Pradesh? Here’s The Truth

Date:

In the past few days, North India experienced heavy rains, wreaking havoc in Himachal Pradesh. The region witnessed record-breaking rainfall, leading to landslides and cloudbursts, severely affecting the lives of the people.

Against this backdrop, a horrific video showing landslides near a town situated on the banks of a river is widely shared on social media, claiming that this happened recently in Himachal Pradesh.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “हिमाचल वालों अब भी वक्त है अल्लाह से तौबा करलो #viral2023 #bestvideo #viralreels #azimakram #viralvideo #himachal #Himachalpradesh #kullu #manali”

(English translation: People of Himachal, there is still time to turn to Allah #viral2023 #bestvideo #viralreels #azimakram #viralvideo #himachal #himachalpradesh #kullu #manali)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Performing a Reverse Image Search of the viral video keyframes, our team found the same video uploaded on Facebook on November 10, 2020, with a captain: “God keep them safe”. This clearly means that the video cannot be recent.

Searching further, we came across several Facebook pages carrying the same viral video in 2022 with captions like “How can we compete with nature”.

The same video was also shared on YouTube, claiming that it shows the damage caused by flash floods in Nepal in 2020. Similarly, a tweet dated August 1, 2020, states that the viral video shows landslides in East Africa.

Though we could not ascertain the location and time of the viral video, it is evident from the above information that it’s not of a recent landslide in Himachal Pradesh.
