Fact Check: Viral KBC Clip Targeting Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan Is Morphed

Date:

A clip from Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) asking derogatory questions about Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan is going viral on social media. Many users are assuming it to be true.

In an episode, Bachchan asks a question worth ₹20,000 to a contestant: “Which of these chief ministers is known as an announcement machine because of his false announcements?” The contestant chooses option B, i.e., Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

A Facebook user shared this video and wrote: “कौन बनेगा करोड़पति में सवाल – कौन से मुख्यमंत्री हैं घोषणा मशीन ? देखें और शेयर करें.” [English translation: Question in Kaun Banega Crorepati — Which Chief Minister is the announcement machine? Watch and Share.]

This Facebook post can be seen here.

It is being widely shared on Facebook and X with a similar claim.

FACT CHECK

NewMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, our team found the same video on the KBC India YouTube handle, dated January 20, 2023. According to the video, the name of the participant seen in it is Bhupendra Chaudhary, who is a resident of Khurai, Madhya Pradesh. At 19:03 seconds of timestamp, one can see a similar footage. However, the question for ₹20,000/= was related to film and not politics.

Bachchan had asked Bhupendra: Which of these films is not about a player?’ The options were: A) Saina, B) Piku, C) Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, D) Well done Mitthu. Below you can see the video.

We also found the viral episode on the official website of ‘Sony Liv‘ and the Facebook page of ‘Sony Entertainment Television’. After watching the episode carefully, we found that the original questions were removed and the viral clip was inserted using editing tools.

We also compared the viral footage with a video uploaded on the official site of ‘Sony Entertainment Television‘. Below you can see a comparison.

Also, a tweet by the Fact-check Unit of the PR Department, Madhya Pradesh Government, dated October 8, 2023, informs that participant Bhupendra Choudhary himself has denied the viral claim, saying that the clip is morphed.

We also found a statement issued by the Sony channel which airs the show calling the viral video “fabricated and misleading”. The channel also urges the audience to be vigilant and refrain from sharing unverified content.

Thus, it is evident from the above findings that the viral video is edited and created by overlaying a voiceover on the original voice.
