The performance of Bangladesh in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 was unsatisfactory under Sakib-Al-Hasan’s captaincy. Out of nine matches played, the team managed to win only two. Meanwhile, a post of Al-Hasan manhandled by a crowd at a jewellery shop is being widely circulated on social media. Many users claim that cricket fans physically confronted Shakib after Bangladesh’s poor performance in the World Cup.
A Facebook user shared this video and wrote: “This happened to Shakib when he returned to Bangladesh after a poor World Cup campaign. This is the respect they show to the best cricketer of their country and they have the audacity to troll India who reached the finals in the World Cup. Bangladeshi people are top-tier ret@rds.”

FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.
Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team identified the same video on the official YouTube handle of Rtv News, a Bangladesh news outlet, dated March 16, 2023. Here, Shakib is harassed by a group of Bangladeshi expatriates while inaugurating a jewellery showroom in Dubai.
With an open keyword search, our team traced a report by abnews24.com, dated March 16, 2023, showing him wearing the same shirt as seen in the viral video. As per the report, Shakib arrived at Dera Bazaar, Dubai, on March 15 to inaugurate a jewellery showroom of Bangladesh-based businessman Arav Khan. He was harassed by fans there. And this event had already sparked controversy because the showroom owner — Arav Khan — is a fugitive and accused of murder involving a Bangladeshi police inspector.
Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video is at least eight months old, and NOT related to the World Cup 2023.
