Fact Check: Old ₹100 Currency Note Still A Legal Tender; Don’t Fall Prey To False Claims

Date:

A news report has gone viral on social media, claiming that the old ₹100 note is no longer a legal tender. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given a deadline to exchange the notes.

The above post can be seen here. NewsMobile also received the same claim on its WhatsApp tipline: +91 11 7127 9799.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the claim and found it to be fake.

Even with relevant Google keywords, our team was not able to find any credible information or news about RBI’s plan to withdraw the old series of 100 currency notes.

We checked RBI’s website for any information on the withdrawal of the said currency note, but found nothing. Also, there was no mention of the 100 currency note in the demonetisation section of the RBI website.

On its website, RBI has specified the old series of currency notes which are valid after the 2016 demonetisation of 500 and 1000 currency notes.

Meanwhile, NewsMobile has reached out to the RBI for their comment, and the story will be updated with their reply. So, it is clear that RBI is NOT withdrawing the old 100 currency notes.
